NEW DELHI — Uttar Pradesh’s chief minister, Yogi Adityanath, said on 27 September 2026 that the state’s large consumer market and expanding infrastructure are the main reasons investors are choosing the region. The statement was made in a press briefing that highlighted the state’s economic potential and recent development initiatives.
Investors drawn to UP’s consumer market and infrastructure
Uttar Pradesh, home to more than 200 million people, is the most populous state in India and a key segment of the national consumer economy. According to the 2021 Census, the state’s population accounts for roughly 16 per cent of India’s total. The chief minister’s remarks come as the government pushes a series of infrastructure projects aimed at boosting industrial activity and retail growth.
Adityanath noted that the state has been investing heavily in road, rail, and logistics networks. The Uttar Pradesh Industrial Development Corporation has announced plans to upgrade 1,200 kilometres of highways and to expand the Lucknow Metro network. In addition, the state has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Railways to develop a new freight corridor linking the eastern and western parts of the state.
“The infrastructure is now in place to support the large consumer base,” the chief minister said. “Investors can see that the state is ready to accommodate their needs.” The statement was reported by The Hindu Business Line on 27 September 2026.
Industry analysts point out that Uttar Pradesh’s strategic location between the industrial hubs of Delhi and the eastern states gives it a logistical advantage. The state’s proximity to the National Capital Region and the presence of major ports such as Ghazipur and Varanasi enhance its appeal for manufacturing and export-oriented businesses.
In addition to physical infrastructure, the state has introduced several policy measures to attract investment. The Uttar Pradesh Investment Promotion Council has streamlined the approval process for new projects, reducing the time required for land acquisition and environmental clearance. The council also offers tax incentives for companies that set up manufacturing units in designated industrial parks.
Financial data from the state’s Department of Economics and Statistics shows a 12.5 per cent increase in foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. The majority of this inflow was directed toward the automotive, textiles, and information technology sectors.
Yogi Adityanath also highlighted the role of the state’s human resource base. Uttar Pradesh has a large pool of skilled and semi‑skilled labour, which is attractive to labour‑intensive industries. The state’s education department has launched vocational training programs in partnership with private firms to address skill gaps.
While the chief minister’s comments were positive, some critics argue that infrastructure projects still face delays due to regulatory hurdles. A recent report by the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP) indicated that 35 per cent of ongoing projects in Uttar Pradesh have not met their projected completion dates.
Despite these concerns, the overall sentiment among investors remains optimistic. A survey conducted by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in August 2026 found that 68 per cent of respondents considered Uttar Pradesh a high‑priority destination for expansion.
The state’s economic growth is expected to continue, with the government projecting a 7.2 per cent increase in gross domestic product (GDP) for 2026–27. This growth is underpinned by the expansion of the retail sector, which is expected to contribute 15 per cent to the state’s GDP.
In a broader context, the central government’s focus on “Make in India” and “Digital India” initiatives aligns with Uttar Pradesh’s development strategy. The state’s participation in the Digital India program has led to the rollout of high‑speed broadband in rural areas, improving connectivity for small and medium enterprises.
Adityanath’s remarks come at a time when the Indian government is encouraging investment in the northern region. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has announced a new scheme to provide subsidies for companies setting up manufacturing units in Uttar Pradesh, aimed at creating employment and boosting exports.
In conclusion, the chief minister’s statement underscores Uttar Pradesh’s growing importance as an investment hub. The combination of a large consumer base, expanding infrastructure, and supportive policy environment positions the state as a key destination for businesses looking to tap into India’s largest market.
