NEW DELHI / KOCHI — A solo travel vlogger from Kerala, Arunima I.P., widely known on social media as “Backpacker Arunima,” has been safely repatriated to India following a high-stakes diplomatic intervention by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the Indian Embassy’s Technical Mission in Kabul, and Union Minister of State Suresh Gopi after she faced an imminent threat of arrest by Taliban authorities in central Afghanistan.
The episode, which unfolded over the weekend in the rugged highlands of Afghanistan’s Bamyan province, has triggered intense social and political scrutiny regarding travel to hostile territories governed by fundamentalist regimes, the realities of solo female transit under hardline restrictions, and the rapid mobilization of Indian state consular apparatus to protect citizens abroad.
The Interception in Bamyan
Arunima, who commands an online following of over 1.2 million across platforms documenting budget solo backpacking expeditions across Central and South Asia, entered Afghanistan on a tourist visa earlier this month. While traveling through Bamyan—an ancient cultural valley famed for the destroyed cliffside Buddhas—she was intercepted by local Taliban security personnel and morality enforcement officers.
Authorities confronted the vlogger over her unaccompanied status, citing the Taliban administration’s strict enforcement of regulations that forbid women from traveling beyond localized radii without an accredited male guardian (mahram) or an authorized, state-registered local guide. Although she had adopted conservative local attire, including a full-length burqa and hijab, local enforcement officials declared her independent movement a violation of regional decrees and threatened immediate detention and formal interrogation.
Fearing custodial detention, Arunima recorded and transmitted an emergency SOS video message to her family and social network, detailing that she was confined to her lodging and facing imminent arrest by Taliban authorities if she attempted further movement.
Diplomatic Mobilization and Central Intervention
Upon receiving the distress call, the vlogger’s family in Kerala reached out to Union Minister of State for Tourism, Petroleum, and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi, seeking urgent central government intervention. Gopi promptly contacted the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi, which established direct communication with the Indian Technical Mission operating out of Kabul.
Indian diplomatic officials in Kabul immediately engaged with regional authorities and security contacts to ensure her physical safety. Recognizing the risks of prolonged exposure in the province, embassy officials dispatched a secure government vehicle with authorized escort personnel from Kabul to Bamyan—navigating more than 180 kilometers of mountainous terrain—to extract Arunima and transport her back to the capital.
Upon arrival in Kabul, she was provided secure consular accommodation under the protection of the Indian mission. Mission personnel subsequently expedited her outbound clearance, securing commercial flight passage from Kabul’s Hamid Karzai International Airport to Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, followed by connecting transit to Cochin International Airport in Kerala.

Speaking to journalists and supporters following her arrival at Kochi airport, Arunima clarified that while she was not placed inside a formal prison cell, she was subjected to severe interrogation and the threat of arrest was absolute. She expressed profound gratitude to Union Minister Suresh Gopi, the Ministry of External Affairs, and the Indian Embassy personnel in Kabul whose swift coordination secured her safe transit home.
Indian authorities have reiterated standing travel advisories urging citizens to exercise extreme caution and avoid non-essential travel to regions with elevated security risks, volatile legal frameworks, and restricted consular access.
